yes, i would very much like to hear a whole new record of kevin in the soul-cutting dexys way. i've been waiting since i been once in the last 10 years three days to london, and then saw what was probably the only poster in the city announcing the release of MY BEAUTY on the day i was leaving. i bought it of course: brilliant record (though it took me some times hearing it to recognize this).

Only got into Dexys in last 5 years but Soul Rebels is without doubt the greatest debut of all time and Dont Stand Me Down the most beautiful album of all time.
Dont know if Kevin reads this site but I cant wait to see you live you're music is inspirational and the return of Dexys is so exciting it would probably not even be topped by a Smiths reunion and thats saying something.

I was 17 when DSMD was released and here i am 18 years later still reeling from this albums sheer beauty, nothing has come close to it because there is nothing to compere this masterpiece with. Ever since i heard there's a chance of a reunion i've thought of nothing else, even dreaming of seeing them live ( no small feat since i live in Australia!)Whatever happens from here on only K.F.Rowland knows, '85 was a difficult year for me as i think it was for Kevin also - but DSMD lifted me up and for that, i thank you Kevin, thank you for the most beautiful thing i've ever heard. love, Paul.

I read in the Guardian Guide recently about the Here and Now cabaret shows, and the writer claimed that Kevin Rowland had turned up to a couple and was considering following in the footsteps of the Human League and succumbing himself. Whether this is true or not... Kevin, don't do it! I only recently discovered your unique talent and I'm absolutely convinced that new material from you can make an impact. I'm not an old Dexys fan in denial - when I first listened to My Beauty I was so taken with your attitude, your voice... Honesty! God, it's so rare today. And tenderness and unforced passion. Keep moving forward, keep creating and I swear you'll never need to go cabaret to hear the roar of the crowd again.

With love and admiration,

Will

Dear Kevin
you have been an inspiration throughout most of my life. I was 10 years old when I first saw you and Dexys on Top Of The Pops performing Come On Eileen, and my heart jumped a beat!!! Honest something inside me just made me stop what I was doing and I listened, and looked with undivided attention. Soon I was bought Too Rye Aye and I played it that much that the tracks wore off the L.P. As I got older I aquired other L.Ps, such as SFYSR and Dont Stand Me Down, they are just the making of a pure genius!! Kevin Rowland has been a constant love of my life and after 21 years I don't think it will ever change. I need you to give the music industry some more of your tallent, so people 'sit up and listen', instead of the souless rubbish that is popular in the charts today. Come back please!!!
Love

... Dexy's Midnight Runners were always one of 'my bands' from back in the day.

As the 70's turned to 80's The Jam and Dexy's formed the soundtrack to my growing up.

After moving on I now, 20 years on, find myself searching for websites for information on Kevin Rowland.

The reason for the search being that I now edit a magazine and constantly find the inspiration for photo shoots and features within SFTYSR.

The sleeve, the songs, the imagery, the vibe - soul.

Inspiring. I would love to interview 'the man' - ideally sat in the Little Nibble in Bearwood... (if it exists)

Keeps on burnin'

I know I've already signed but just a thought..I'd love to see the release of The Best of Kevin Rowland & Dexys Midnight Runners. Unlike the one that came out in the early nineties, this would feature all the same tracks but in addition, tracks from The Wanderer and My Beauty, with new artwork and sleeve notes from Kevin, Billy Adams, Helen, Big Jim, Kevin Archer etc. I loved Kevin Archer's sleevenotes for the 20th anniversary release of SFTYSR. I'm sure it would be a hit, it would put Kevin firmly in the minds of the record buying public and pave the way for an album of new songs. Anyone agree?

Just a quick one you might find interesting as you're all Dexy's fans.
I went into my local gym the other week and heard Come On Eileen playing on VH1 or whatever was on the TVs up on the walls, only to turn round and be faced with Kevin "Billy" Adams on a machine directly in front of one of the TVs, watching himself on the video! The frustrating thing was that nobody seemed to realise apart from me that the guy on TV was actually sweating it out amongst the rest of us.
So now you know!

When I bought the single Tonight I thought Kevin Rowland's Band should have been included on the album, I'm so glad it finally is. I also thought, watching the DVD of the videos, the video version of I Love You (Listen To This) was even better than the album version. Anyway, I'm rambling, I hope and pray that Kevin will make another album, he's an incredible talent, no one else comes near.

I never really paid much attention to Dexy’s Midnight Runners since the early-80’s. Come On Eileen was one of a very few songs, which after a few drinks, could persuade me to join the dance floor. I could even nearly stamp my feet to the rhythm of that distinct drum crescendo.
A couple of weeks ago, just as I was about to switch off the TV and hit the sack, I noticed (or rather, heard) Noddy Holder presenting Rock Legends (ITV, UK) featuring … Dexy’s Midnight Runners? What? Dexy’s Midnight Runners – legends? I think not Noddy. Perhaps you’re more than a little biased due to your common West Midlands connection with their lead singer?
Incredulously, I decided to watch and prove to myself that I knew better than the Slade front man.
It only took a couple of minutes to change my mind. The more I watched and listened the more I couldn’t believe how I had missed the obvious genius of Kevin Rowland & co since 1985. The songs and videos featured came from “Don’t Stand Me Down”.
Before the show had finished I had purchase the album online.
Since it arrived through the letter box it has hardly left my CD. I can only describe the album as absolutely brilliant. Kevin Rolland and all concerned have performed on and produced this with obvious pride. He writes in the accompanying sleeve notes about “This is What She’s Like” that “when I listen to it now I’m amazed at how beautiful it turned out”. I can’t add more. The millions of second-generation Irish living in the UK should listen to the haunting words of “My National Pride”. So many, like Kevin, are struggling with their sense of identity, like trees without roots, scared to believe in themselves (I paraphrase some of Kevin’s words).
Am I exaggerating to say that had Kevin Rolland allowed it, this album could easily have become a classic, in the same league as, say any of Bob Dylan’s?
If you haven't done so already, buy it and decide for yourselves.
Well done Kev. (And personal apologies from a Coventry City Fan for your experience at Highfield Road).

I just missed Dexy's first time round but Don't Stand Me Down is the most timeless album ever. Absolutely awesome. As for the request for Kevin et al to reform/ record new material, well we've never needed talented, intelligent songwriting so much, Kevin please save us from Pop Idol/Rivals/boy bands/ girl bands/sclub just out of nappies and the herd of sheep mentality that's threatening to destroy music 4ever.

A few years ago I had to have my car repaired and when returning to pick the car up a teenage mechanic came up to me and asked what music was in the tape deck, when I told him it was 'The Wanderer' by Kevin Rowland he wrote it down and said he was desperate to buy it. This was the beginning of the Drum and Bass era but the music by Kevin Rowland has the ability to reach to all age groups and make an impression. I am now searching for all KR records and would love to see him live or simply see him back where he belongs - in the studio. Keep doing it Kev.

Kevin ,what can i say as someone who grew up with DMR and have still never left your music everyday i listen to one of your discs lets get something new out,by the way you owe me at least one concert. As an avid dexy,s fan you cancelled the concert at the odeon,Edinburgh in 1979/80 when i was just a dockers jacket wearing fan, your music has made me laugh, cry and dance so get back in the studio and do what you do best nad if any recording label is out there take note force this man back into the studio do what you can to make him return and at least give us something more than the disposable guff that exsisits in the music industry today.
i may be a long way from scotland now kevin but your music will live with me and the others 4ever,much respect and love nad get back to what you do best MAKING GREAT MUSIC.

I would like to endorse the views of the people.Kev/Dexys must record again, the songs on the J.Ross show are far too good to only be seen and heard on my VCR.The press were not always favourable, but one thing they agreed with was the live shows. They were innovative, inspiring performances, the like I want to see again.A.T.B.

Most likely, Brit Dexy's listeners don't know the man even reached Central America. It was 1982 or so in San Jose, Costa Rica, and Come on Eileen was a hit on the radio and the telly. I got my Too-rye-ay vinyl, which is still precious to me, in 83 or so, and soon after the marvelous Don't Stand Me Down, also vinyl.
In the nineties, I bought a Best Of Dexy's CD in a local, crowded, busy commercial Costa Rican CD store. Some years later I had the BBC concert CD brought from cathalogue by another local store. And recently a friend in Switzerland got me My Beauty and sent it over the mail.
Real musicians commited to real music are so few. The world needs more people like Kevin.
If there is a new material CD it will find its way to Costa Rica. That should make it about 51 people interested.
Thanks, Mr. Rowland.

Hi there!
I saw Juicy Springbeam 1975, might have been 74.
and he opened the show "Thunder Road" in a very downscaled version, I loved it.
Today, several years later I found Kevins version on this site, and it surely stand the pace.
No idea why the Boss stopped this version, but it was a mistake.
Thank god for mp3.
Will check in here regurlarly.
I´ve been listen to Kevin since the debut and he´s still one of the few outstanding...

Kevin . . . it's obvious to me you have what it takes to come back from hell stronger than ever! You wouldn't be the first to do this, but you'd possibly be the best. And I'm sure it's a tricky path. You have to follow your heart, which appears to have always been your intention. I strongly suspect you're already working on it, in one way or another.

I'm 31, and I wish I'd jumped on the DMR bandwagon in my teens . . . but the music is TIMELESS -- it says everything I've felt about music (which has gone so wrong in so many ways today). I'm a songwriter who has chosen to stay out of the seemingly gruesome and corrupt industry . . . but maybe I'm wrong, and by your example (past and hopefully present), I'll find the courage to change my mind. The three Dexy's albums have changed my life already in four mere months -- and I still have two solo albums to absorb -- and I'm truly happier, saner. THANK YOU, KEVIN! Be well! Above all, be well and happy.

I must say that the idea that this will be forwarded to Kevin Rowland himself is very thrilling. Even if it doesn't convince him to get into the studio, I'd just like to say just exactly how deep an impact Dexy's Midnight Runners on me, and how inspiring his lyrics, music and ideals are to me.

One of very few artists I'd call 'genius'.

I've just read the guestbook and so many people have expressed the sentiments I feel so strongly. As a kid punk changed my life but then Dexy's came along...I've loved many bands along the way but I just keep going back to those precious recordings. No one else can write a song like 'Until I Believe In My Soul' or 'Knowledge Of Beauty' and God knows, no one can sing 'em like Kev! And he can still do it, as he proved on 'I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top'and 'The Greatest Love Of All'

Kevin, it seemed like a lifetime between "The Wanderer" and "My Beauty" but, like many others, I kept the faith. A misguided faith, perhaps, but you know what it's like when particular records or artists move you. You want more. Selfish, I know. Maybe I should just be grateful for all the wonderful music that you've made. I am but that doesn't stop me wanting more. Release "Manhood"

Hi Kevin,
dito, thanks for all your music. I could go on f'ever bout ya, but you know what I'm think'n and how I'm feel'n.
If I made movies I'd have you and your music in em.
And I hope I don't sound too melodramatic but you (along with people like Kirsty McColl, Rodriguiz, Tom Waits, Dylan, Arlo Guthrie etc)(in different ways) have shown us some of the most beautiful aspects of the human being.
To me, you are up there with Shakespear (for your observations) and Tolkien (for what you have done for British music)
Thanks heaps (I just bought "Too-Rye-Ay" on CD a couple of weeks ago. I still have it on vinyl along with DSMD) Sigh,
I hope you are well and happy and doing what you want.
Your music has made a huge differance (for the better, in my and, by the looks of things, a lot of other peoples lives)
thanks again,
(oh all right then...)
heaps of love mate,

I'm, not a guestbook signing type of guy,but i've been searching for something to afirm my complete passion for 'Don't Stand Me Down' - oh yes and it's key song for me and I guess so many others - Tell Me What She's Like?
I'll sob like a child at it's beauty - It's immensely special to me. 35 years old and i'm like a kid with this song. It tugs you in and won't let go - watching the DVD which to someone who didn't care might have you cringing helps with the setting - although I guess it could and probably is emotionally in a thousand corners of some other lives to see it in it's New York appartment is just fine for me. I've read elsewhere about the Beachboys harmonies - fuck no. More passion here. I know Kevin et al put life and soul into this. When Kevin tells us what she's like the song pulls you down a side street and kicks 3 colours of puke out of you. I can almost feel and see Kevin clutching the mike for dear life - atleast that's what it does for me...so forgive me for my indulgence. Then it just sends me, hate that expression, but can you keep still - you just gotta dance, I don't care how, just move...When those musicians play it's gotta but the perfect sound. I've seen a lot of gigs in my time and I've seen so many songs dragged and pulled to a 14 minute death - When Kevin tells us 'that's my story..it's the strongest i've ever sung... it could and if I had my way should go on and on. Drink a bottle of wine and learn how to cry again. Thankyou Kevin

How strange to be so moved by someone i have never met ,most likely never will - To be so worried for you during your dark years and to feel such joy when you resurfaced a while back , looking much more together and (dare i say )Happy and Gounded - If you ever find the strenght and time to release anything new - I for one will be BANGING on the door of the shop the day it comes out and i'm not alone !!

KEVIN!

First I bought Searching... and i absolutely loved it. But then I got Too-Rye-Ay and for a couple of weeks it was the best record I'd ever heard.

And so I heard Don't Stand Me Down. I've never felt like this for a record before. It's just not fantastic. It makes me cry, every single song.

Only two albums in music history has been even close to DSMD: Too-Rye-Ay and Stand! by Sly & The Family Stone.

Of course, My Beauty was the best album of the 90's - so brilliant.

So i just wanted to thank you for all this music. It's a cliché, I know, but you've changed my life.

By the way, I heard about you in the excellent POP magazine. Andres Lokko wrote something like 30 pages about you in the last issue, and that interview completely took my breath. I LOVE YOU!

Dear kevin
What is there to lose, it would be excellent to hear some new songs that again stand alone in quailty and meaning. To see once again the talent that has for to long remained out of the site.

Kevin

I have seen you 4 times. The Old Vic in '81 (The most inspiring thing I've ever witnessed), Shaftsbury Theatre for The Bridge, The Dominion Theatre in 85 and in Paris the other year for your short My Beauty set. You are a one off Kevin, and you have touched and altered my soul & my life. Sounds Corny I know, but I don't care.

Now please listen to me.... You have got several songs up your sleeve that need to be heard! If they are anything like Manhood and If I Ever, then your next album will be another landmark in music, just like SFTYSR and DSMD and My Beauty. (In five years time they will be heaping praise on My Beauty just like they did with DSMD.)

The trouble is your always one step ahead of the game, and they don't like that.

I'll see you at The Garage for the Look Tour, but how about getting a band together and hitting the road on your own sometime soon.

All the best in whatever you do. And thanks for what you,ve given us to date!

Adam

Just discovered Don't Stand me down a month or two back and really I'm enjoyin' it.

I would be keenly appreciative of any more future recordings that is for sure.

Dear Kev,

Maybe I should have written this quickly and not thought about it because the more I considered my words the more I hesitated. You see, Kev, (as much as I’d love to see a new Kevin Rowland or, dare I say it Dexys album) you strike me as a man who deserves his day off. I’ve heard that you’re in love again and happy. Nothing you do should jeopardise that. I worry that if you make another album that you will immerse yourself into another period of driving obsession. And if so, maybe you would lose more than you gain. People who know me well would be surprised to see me write this next phrase but at the end of the day there are more important things than music. When the time is right I hope you will once again enter the studio and when you do I will be first in the queue to buy the product. An album of beautiful, inspiring, positive love songs would be fantastic. When I say ‘love songs’ I mean it in the widest sense. Songs of positive beauty, songs that say you’re all right. Songs that say you love life. During the My Beauty period (God, Kev, that was 1999 maybe you should get a move on after all) you struck me as fragile, not ready for the fray, not quite having dealt with the deep feelings of guilt and self-loathing that you’d experienced. Maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree and maybe you’re stronger now. If so, get on with it, man, we’ve waited long enough. Only joking, of course. Way back (10 years ago, Kev) I saw you play a song, ‘Manhood’ on TV. It’s a sure fire classic and an absolute travesty that it’s never seen the light of day. If everything you do is as good as that we’ll have another album to treasure. But I’m a patient man, Kev. I can wait until you are ready.

love, Eddie

Kev, love all your albums. However, the Dont Stand Me Down album has always touched deep rooted chords within me and different songs on that album have somehow become the soundtrack to various periods of my life, I believe the italians have a word for this? Thanks Kev

Kevin, ignore the muppetts who know no better, we the people know you are a man of intelligence, with observations worth listening to. Most of us dont know you and so rely on hearing your work to share your thoughts. The music world is devoid of character at this moment, it and we need you back in the studio or back on the stage, keep on running Kev, never stop.

I loved the early era Dexy's, they we're an awesome band,I went off the celtic period music, but they are a band that does not get the credit they deserve. I'd love to see the "young soul rebels" era line up tour one more time! Thanks for the memories & the great music.

I was 15 when 'dance Stance' was released and 16 when 'Geno' hit number one. Those years shape and influence the direction you take in life. The passion and raw emotion in your music had a profound effect on this angry young man. Although aware of Northern Soul I became hooked through 'Breaking Down..' and 'Seven days...' etc and from the age of eighteen spent my weekends around the country at Northern Soul venues. Through Northern Soul I developed friendships which are still going strong to this day. I followed your work with equal passion throughout the years although I always felt lonely as the Northern 'elite' were not too keen on someone taking 'their' music into the mainstream. It wasn't until I bought a PC and got online that I realised there were still followers of your music out there. Through this website and the Delphi Forum I have developed friendships all around the world. All these friendships which I value deeply are down to you and your music Kevin. Hopefully one day I will get the opportunity to thank you personally, until that day, thankyou Mr Rowland for a wonderful 20+ years and hopefully heres to many more....

So Kevin, I know you read this.
All of those thoughts inside your head, you want to share them, right?
Well, we want to hear them.
Personally, i feel there has been a massive hole musically speaking, since you last gave us a glimp of your genius. We need to hear you again, we need that old "soulpower" to return, we are sick to death of pre-packaged, record producers girlfriends/tv pop "idol" winners and boy and girl bands. We need something real. You are real.
The return of the young soul rebels anyone?

Having been a huge fan of Kevin and Dexy's since their beginnings I was thrilled to see this website and wholeheartedly endorse the campaign to get Kevin back in the studio. I saw Dexy's on three occasions although I'm now - 22 or 23 years on - wondering if the first occasion was a figment of my imagination. I think I saw Dexy's supporting the Specials somewhere in Yorkshire in 79 or 80 - can anyone confirm a concert/tour took place? I then definitely saw the INtense Emotion Review show in June 1980 at Doncaster Rotters supported by the Black Arabs which was just fantastic. I subsequently saw Dexy's perform in 1982 I think at NOttingham's Royal
(?) Theatre where Teardrop Explodes were also on the bill. Another full money's worth event. At around the same time a mate and I travelled from Yorkshire to see James Brown at Birmingham Apollo. We met Big Jimmy and Kev in the bar and they were really nice to us - we had nowhere to sleep and Jimmy offered to let us kip on his living room floor. IN the end we got a milk train to Coventry so the story kind of fizzles out there. I have just bought Dont Stand Me Down and am reminding myself what the fuss was all about. Full power to your website.

Life is very short. Make the most of it while you can. I don't want to look back at some time in the future and think of all that material that Kev had prepared for Creation never realised. Do you Kevin? He has a great talent, such a shame to waste it, such a shame.
